Craft Kyushu | A report from an international student living in Kyushu about the real experiences and excitement of traditional crafts

HSU MYAT KHAING
Craftsmanship experience program
Day 1 In 1933, the first generation Yoshio Takatsuka founded Takatsuka Seito. In 1951, Takayama Porcelain Co., Ltd. was established. In 2021, the business was transferred to Saikai Porcelain Co., Ltd. and the company name was changed to Takayama Co., Ltd. In 2023 (August), the company moved to a new office building.
The company has a 90-year history and produces modern and stylish Japanese tableware for everyday use using the traditional technique of "Goth."

The final kitchen is 7.5 cubic metres in size.
The finished pottery and tableware must be washed.
After cleaning, the ceramic pieces are printed with beautiful patterns using a pad printer.
The finished pottery products are very attractive with their rich colors and diverse designs. It is also a valuable opportunity to learn about the pottery production process. If you would like to actually make something with your own hands, experienced instructors will carefully teach you the pottery making technique called "wheel". It is a very good experience.
Day 2 We visited the Hasami Town History and Culture Center, where we learned about the spread of various religions throughout the ages.
There is a small shop near the center that makes mini parfaits where you can choose from a variety of styles of parfait to make your favorite one.
Takayama Pottery Co., Ltd. also offers a program where you can make and wear handmade accessories (such as strings and bracelets) using pottery fragments that you have collected.
Day 3 The pottery and soba shops in Hasami Town are very interesting, and you can make your own handmade items with your own design.
