Tour of Okawa City

Oo hlaing

When I visited Okawa City, I was fascinated by the relaxed atmosphere and gentle breeze of this town. Located in the Kyushu region, this town is impressive for its clean air and pleasant breeze. Traditional Japanese houses line the streets, and walking through the quiet streets naturally soothes the mind.

On the day I arrived, I had the opportunity to meet and talk with other university students. I was a little nervous to talk to people I had never met before, but we quickly became lifelong friends and enjoyed talking about our cultures and lives. Their warm welcome made me feel like I was part of the city right away.

At lunchtime, we enjoyed local cuisine. The dishes, made with freshly fried chicken, fish, and locally grown vegetables, retained the original flavor of the ingredients and were all delicious. As we ate together, we had lively conversations and endless laughs.

In addition, I had the opportunity to visit the Setsugagawa Lift Bridge and learn about its history and structure. Watching the strong current of the Setsugagawa River from the bridge was soothing. I was reminded of the charm of this town, where nature and history coexist in harmony.

In the afternoon, we participated in a practical class on woodworking, a traditional craft of Okawa City. The teachers were professional, clean, and fun, and we were able to make wooden products ourselves, with careful guidance. Working with our hands while surrounded by the scent of wood was a special experience.

On the second day, we continued our tour with a visit to Nitawara Wood Factory, which produces Kumiko, a famous Japanese woodcarving technique. Kumiko is not only a master of woodcarving techniques, but also a refined art filled with traditional cultural values. It was amazing to see how skilled artisans create unique wooden products with particular precision and patience.

My time in Otaki was not only an amazing trip, but also a valuable experience that allowed me to feel the warmth of the culture and community. I was able to experience the charm of the town first-hand and bring back many memories that will stay with me forever.
