WALAWWATHTHA THENNAKOONLAGE ASHANTHI

Nagasaki International University
Summer vacation for international students
Hasami Town "Tono" experience program 2023
(August 21st, 22nd, 23rd)

Start of day 1:

# I had the opportunity to participate in all three days of this program. On the first day, we learned about the history of HASAMI. The history of the HASAMI industry spans about 400 years.

Afterwards we went to explore the area around the place.

# There we could see various beautiful products and also see pictures of the history of this place. Also, various decorations have been made.

# After that, we prepared to make the Japanese dish "soba." Although I had eaten "soba" in Japan before, this was the first time I learned how to make soba noodles.

# It was a lot of fun. At the end, we made and ate soba noodles like this.

The soba I made wasn't spicy so I only ate a little bit, but I'll try making it again at home.

# Afterwards, I visited the Hasami ware factory. It was a new experience for me. I saw that the people working there were very skilled at their work.

# I had the opportunity to paint Hasami ware and on the first day it was fun and I learned a lot.

# On my first day, I got to know the factory workers, the professors at the university, and the students from various countries attending the university.

# I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the teachers and everyone else involved who taught me so much on the first day.

Day 2:

On the second day, we walked around the pottery town with our guide.

The surroundings and nature were so beautiful and although it was hot at first, I felt great once we reached the top of the mountain, and enjoyed the warm hospitality of the local people, delicious food and honey.

Afterwards, we visited the second largest mountaineering site in the world. With a total length of about 160 meters and 33 kiln chambers, this site is located at the foot of Mt. Shirataki, where pottery stone is mined, and was once used as a communal kiln. In recognition of its importance in the history of Hasami ware, it has been designated a national historic site. Restoration work is currently underway.

Lunch was delicious and I'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to those who cooked.

After that, we went to look for old Hasami. It was a really wonderful experience to encounter 350-year-old and 200-year-old Hasami trees.

At the end of the second day, we all had fun making necklaces and had a new experience.

Last day:

On the last day, the third day, we went to learn about Hasami Town's industries.

On that day, we learned a lot about Hasami Town's industries and even had a little design craft experience. It was a very fun activity and they even had some little games prepared for us. It was a very fun day.

At the end, we made a jumbo pizza and baked it in a Hasami ware kiln. The teacher carefully taught us how to make it. The jumbo pizza was very delicious, and we learned a lot and had fun. Thank you very much to all the staff.

There were many memorable moments, lots of fun and I learned a lot.

It's a place where you can really learn a lot. I highly recommend it.

We are extremely grateful to the staff who mentored us in every way.

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to my professors at university who allowed me to join this journey.
