SU SU HTUN

Okawa Training Trip

Burmese

Hello everyone. I would like to report on my experience learning about handicrafts during my visit to Okawa City on March 17 and 18.

Day 1

On March 17, we traveled from Sasebo to Okawa City. In Okawa City, we visited a workshop that makes furniture and other household items, as well as a place where kumiko woodwork is produced.

I was very happy to see the actual process of making things with my own eyes.

Around noon, we had Okawa’s famous karaage and sushi at Okawa TERRAZZA. Both were very delicious.

After that, we tried making kumiko woodwork ourselves. When I saw the finished kumiko piece, I felt very happy. I would like to try making one again if I have the chance.

The lemon berry drink I bought and had at Okawa TERRAZZA was also very delicious.

After that, we took a short rest at our accommodation and then went to see the Chikugo River Lift Bridge. The bridge looked beautiful with the sunset, and it matched the scenery very well.

After returning from the bridge, we had dinner at our accommodation. The meal was a very Japanese-style dinner, and we heard that the dish that looked like meatballs was also handmade. Among the meat dishes I have eaten during my first year in Japan, it was one of the most delicious.

Day 2

On the second day, we walked around the town with a local guide. As we walked, the guide explained various aspects of Okawa City’s history, which helped me understand the town more deeply.

I learned that Okawa City is a town with a long history, and that many cultural heritage sites are carefully preserved there, including old shrines, former samurai houses, and historic buildings.

After that, we split into groups and went to have lunch. The karaage and various grilled dishes we had for lunch that day were all very delicious.

After that, we had time to talk with local people. They explained Okawa City to us carefully, which helped me gain a deeper understanding of the town.

If I have the chance, I would definitely like to visit Okawa City again. I also hope that people who are interested in handicrafts and craftsmanship will visit Okawa City as well.
