Craft Kyushu | A report from an international student living in Kyushu about the real experiences and excitement of traditional crafts

ZAW MIN HEIN
Training Trip to Okawa City

Burmese
Hello.
The training trip to Okawa City was a truly enjoyable experience for me. I was very satisfied because I was able to make many unforgettable memories in one place.

Kumiko is one of Japan’s traditional handicrafts. I felt that this technique is extremely valuable.
I believe that what gives kumiko its value is creativity, patience, and a deep respect for the technique. Because of these qualities, I understood why kumiko is so highly regarded.
It was a truly happy and satisfying experience for me to see kumiko with my own eyes, as it is a technique that I do not usually have many opportunities to experience closely.

Former Yoshiwara Residence
If you visit Okawa City, I highly recommend visiting the Former Yoshiwara Residence as well.
Here, you can enjoy traditional Japanese tea while listening to stories about the history of Okawa City in the past. You can also learn about the excellent architectural structure of this historic house and the role it once played in the local community.
When I entered the building, I felt as if I had gone back in time, and I was able to feel the history and culture of Okawa more deeply.

If you have the chance to visit Okawa City, I believe the beautiful sunset scenery over the Chikugo River will warmly welcome you.
The local food and vinegar drinks made in the area are also part of Okawa’s charm. If you actually try them, I think you will surely enjoy them.
